Flemington

Outlet shopping, Victorian homes, the trial of the century (well, the 1930s anyway) and riveting railways – Flemington’s attractions are numerous and diverse.

If you’re a train aficionado, head to Northlandz (495 Rt. 202 S.), which houses the world’s largest miniature railroad, with more than 100 trains navigating eight miles of track. The exhibit meanders for a mile and includes minute mountains, cities and bridges.

Ride the Raritan River Railway, a replica steam train located here; for a longer excursion, take the scenic Black River & Western Railroad, which runs between Flemington and Ringoes.

The station at the Flemington end is conveniently adjacent to Liberty Village Premium Outlets, with 40 outlet stores, ranging from cookware to kids' clothes and including perennial favorites J. Crew, Coach and Timberland.

For a more historic look at the town, stop by its oldest building, the 1756 Flemington Castle Museum.

 Don’t Miss:

• Walking tours of historic downtown, especially around Christmas, when Victorian Main Street is all aglow.

• Hot-air balloon trips at Hunterdon Ballooning and golfing at Paradise Golf Center.

Insider Tip:
The Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse was the site of the sensational Charles Lindbergh Jr. baby murder trial in 1935.

Many of the reporters covering the blockbuster trial stayed at the Union Hotel, across the street.

Today it’s a restaurant and journalists’ tattered press passes remain on exhibit. The courthouse has trial artifacts on display and every October it hosts “The Trial of the Century,” a theatrical trial reenactment.
