The National Park Service operates a number of National Historic Parks, National Recreation Areas, scenic trails, natural areas and more throughout New Jersey. Sandy Hook Unit, Gateway National Recreation Area is a 2,044-acre barrier beach peninsula at the northern tip of the Jersey Shore. The park features seven miles of ocean beaches, salt marshes, hiking trails and a maritime holly forest. Open all year. After the victories at Trenton and Princeton during the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army under Gen. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area encompasses nearly 70,000 acres of breathtaking scenery along 40 miles of the Delaware River, which winds through the Appalachian Mountains. The Great Falls of the Passaic River is the second largest waterfall by volume, east of the Mississippi River, next to Niagara Falls. Centered in an industrial historic district, considered to be "The Cradle of American Industry," the waterfall is bounded by park area and can be viewed 24 hours a day. It's classified as a United States Biosphere Reserve and in 1978 was established by Congress as the country's first National Reserve. It includes portions of seven southern New Jersey counties, and encompasses 1.1-million acres of farms, forests and wetlands.
