Ellis Island was the gateway through which more than 12 million immigrants passed between 1892 and 1954 in their search for freedom of speech and religion and for economic opportunity in the United States.
The centerpiece of of Ellis Island is the 100,000-square-foot immigration museum that's devoted to the island's history and the story of immigration to America, from the first arrival to the present day.
