Nature lovers: On the outskirts of Salem, along the banks of the Delaware, is Fort Mott State Park. Take a walking tour through the 1856 fort’s gun batteries and on the Fort Mott Seawall along the river to verdant Finns Point Trail. The park has picnic areas and a playground. In summer, the Three Forts Ferry goes to Pea Patch Island to visit Fort Delaware. The fort’s 32-foot-tall and 30-foot-thick granite walls housed tens of thousands of soldiers, officers and political prisoners during the Civil War.
