West Orange
If you feel like a light bulb has gone off when you enter West Orange, you’re not alone.
This is the home of Thomas Alva Edison’s renowned laboratory, where the inventor worked on more than half of his patented inventions.
Visitors to the Edison National Historic Site have access to the family’s mansion and grounds and laboratory.
West Orange has a number of other illuminating attractions. Stop at the Turtle Back Zoo to see bears, wolves and penguins. For an icy experience, strap on skates and enjoy the Codey Arena, a full-service ice rink.
Both are located in the 2,000-plus-acre South Mountain Reservation, which is a great place to picnic or hike.
Another green area is Eagle Rock Reservation, which features scenic lookouts with unparalleled views of the New York City skyline.
The original 1920s viewing pavilion has been incorporated into the Highlawn Pavilion restaurant.
