Some things just get better with age, and charming Cape May is no exception. This coveted destination is the nation’s oldest seaside resort and a perennial favorite on Condé Nast Travelers’ “Most Beautiful Towns in America” list. It boasts an exceptional culinary scene, fine wines, craft brews and distilled spirits, fun festivals and special events year-round. The entire city is also a National Historic District, with over 600 preserved Victorian buildings.

For an up-close and personal view of the gingerbread trim Victorian architecture is famous for, visit the preserved 1879 Emlen Physick Estate. Trolley tours provided by The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) are a wondrous introduction to the historic district, as is the popular evening ghost tour. And, of course, dozens of Victorian B&Bs stand with rocking chairs at the ready.

The natural beauty of the southernmost beach in the state has been a draw for centuries. A lovely promenade runs along the sand, perfect for biking or jogging. On Sunset Beach, you can search for Cape May Diamonds (polished quartz that washes up on shore).

The pedestrian-friendly Washington Street Mall is a hub of shopping activity. And the annual Cape May Restaurant Week – when acclaimed participating eateries offer up delectable three-course pre-fixe menus – is a must-do for foodies.
