West Orange

If you feel like a light bulb went off when you enter West Orange, you’re not alone.Relive the past at the Thomas Edison Museum, home of the inventor’s renowned laboratory in which the incandescent light bulb, the first commercially viable motion picture camera and the phonograph were invented.

Visitors at the Thomas Edison National Historic Site have access to the family’s mansion, grounds and laboratory.

West Orange has a number of other illuminating attractions. Enjoy a day at the Turtle Back Zoo to see over 15 exhibits including bears, wolves and penguins. For an icy experience, strap on skates and enjoy the Codey Arena at South Mountain and their full-service ice rink.

Both are located in the 2,000-plus-acre South Mountain Reservation, a great place to picnic or hike.

Another green area is Eagle Rock Reservation, which features scenic lookouts with unparalleled views of the New York City skyline.

The original 1920s viewing pavilion has been incorporated into the Highlawn Pavilion restaurant which also hosts luxurious weddings and corporate and special events.
