A mecca of arts and culture, consider a three-day road trip that explores the world-class museums and galleries throughout the state.
Newark is home to the largest museum in the state, Newark Museum. With over 80 galleries and collections that include American, Asian, African and Classical art, the Newark Museum offers a multifaceted cultural experience. Take a stroll through the gardens and stop at the museum café for lunch. While in Newark check out the nearby historic sites which include the Dey Mansion, built in 1740 for military commander Colonel Theunis Dey, and the Isreal Crane House, home to the merchant that first constructed the New Jersey turnpike. Continue your cultural experience with a meal at Fornos Restaurant, which offers award-winning seafood from Spain.
On day two, drive west towards Morristown and explore the Morris Museum. Self-proclaimed as the epicenter of art, science, culture and history in the state, the Morris Museum has a large scale collection ranging from rocks and minerals to model trains and musical instruments. The on-site Bickford Theatre offers plays, concerts and a variety of performances year round. After getting your arts fix, stroll through historic Morristown, which is rich in historic sites, parks and recreation spaces. Consider driving out to the Stickley Museum at Cratfsman Farm, a twentieth century country estate, or the Morristown National Historical Park. For the best sleeping accommodations in town, stay at the timeless Madison Hotel, located in the heart of Morristown.
On the final day of your road trip, head south to Princeton, New Jersey and immerse yourself in the arts and culture of Princeton University. Check out the university’s art museum, which features a vast collection of contemporary art.
